Stuttering in games has always been a popular topic in forum discussions. Games become sluggish, unresponsive, and laggy due to screen stuttering and players have to suffer delay in input actions under such case. Severe stuttering would significantly lower the FPS in games and thus a fantastic gaming experience will be shredded by disfluencies and latency spikes. Why is your FPS so high but the game still stuttering? Is there any way to get rid of this headache? Here we will show you some basic fixes to troubleshoot choppy gameplay with high FPS.
Trick 1: Update the Graphics Driver
Trick 2: Lower Screen Resolution
Trick 3: Turn off Windows Game Bar
Trick 4: Turn off Unnecessary Apps and Background Processes
One of the most important factors that affect your game performance is your graphics driver. A graphics driver makes it possible for your graphics card to display the game graphics on your screen. If your graphics driver is outdated or corrupted, it may cause game freezing with high FPS. To fix this, you need to update your graphics driver to the latest version that is compatible with your system and your game. But how do you do that without wasting time and energy? The answer is simple: use Driver Talent, the ultimate driver updater tool that can take care of all your driver needs. Driver Talent can automatically scan your PC for any driver issues and update them with one click. No need to search for the right driver online, no need to worry about compatibility or security issues, no need to deal with complex installation procedures. Just let Driver Talent do the magic.
Step 1: Launch Driver Talent and click on Scan to detect any driver problems on your PC.
Step 2: After the scan is completed, you will see a list of drivers that need to be updated or repaired. Find your graphics driver and click on Update to download and install the latest version.
Step 3: Restart your PC to make the changes take effect.
Another possible reason for game stuttering with high FPS is that your screen resolution is too high for your PC to handle. Screen resolution refers to the number of pixels that are displayed on your screen. The higher the resolution, the more detailed and sharp the game graphics will be, but also the more demanding it will be for your PC.
Step 1: Right-click on an empty area of your desktop and select Display settings.
Step 2: In the Display settings window, scroll down and find Display resolution.
Step 3: Click on the drop-down menu and select a lower resolution than the current one. For example, if your current resolution is 1920 x 1080, you can try 1600 x 900 or 1366 x 768.
Step 4: Click on Apply and confirm the changes.
Windows Game Bar uses some of your system resources that could otherwise be used for running the game smoothly. To fix this, you can try turning off Windows Game Bar completely or disabling some of its features that you don’t need.
Step 1: Press Windows + I keys to open Settings, select Gaming > Game bar.
Step 2: Toggle off the switch next to Record game clips, screenshots, and broadcast using Game Bar.
Step 3: Click on Captures from the left pane and toggle off the switches next to Record in the background while I’m playing a game and Record audio when I record a game.
Step 4: Click on Game Mode from the left pane and toggle off the switch next to Game Mode.
Is there are too many apps and background processes running on your PC at the same time as the game? These apps and processes can consume some of your CPU, RAM, disk, and network resources that are essential for running the game smoothly. To fix this, you can try turning off or closing any unnecessary apps and background processes that you don’t need while playing games.
Step 1: Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc keys to open Task Manager.
Step 2: Select Processes tab and sort the processes by CPU, Memory, Disk, or Network usage.
Find any apps or processes that are using a lot of resources but are not related to the game or essential for your system. For example, you can turn off web browsers, antivirus software, cloud storage services, etc.
Step 3: Right-click on each app or process that you want to turn off and select End task.
V-Sync can cause game stuttering especially if your game frame rate is higher than your monitor refresh rate. This is because V-Sync can introduce input lag, which is a delay between your mouse or keyboard actions and the game response. To fix this, you can try changing the V-Sync state to match your game and monitor settings.
Step 1: Open the game that you want to play and go to its settings menu.
Step 2: Find the option for V-Sync or Vertical Sync and change it according to your preference. You can choose to turn it on, off, or adaptive. Turning it on will synchronize the game frame rate with the monitor refresh rate, turning it off will allow the game frame rate to exceed the monitor refresh rate, and turning it adaptive will adjust the game frame rate according to the monitor refresh rate.
Step 3: Save the changes and exit the settings menu.
The last possible cause of game stuttering with high FPS is that your hard disk drive (HDD) has some errors or bad sectors that affect your game files. Over time, your HDD may develop some errors or bad sectors due to physical damage, wear and tear, power surges, etc. These errors or bad sectors can corrupt your game files and cause them to load slowly or incompletely, resulting in laggy game.
Step 1: Press Windows + E keys to open File Explorer.
Step 2: Right-click on the drive that contains your game files and select Properties.
Step 3: In the Properties window, click on Tools tab and then Check under Error checking.
Step 4: Tap on Scan drive in the pop-up dialog and wait for the process to complete.
If any errors are found, follow the instructions to repair them.
